Walk into most salons in India and you will be offered both, often in the same sentence, sometimes as if they were the same thing. They are not. Keratin and smoothening solve a similar problem — frizz — by different means, and they leave your hair in noticeably different places.
Keratin is a conditioning treatment. It works on the outside of the hair, smoothing the cuticle and sealing it with heat. Frizz drops, shine goes up, and your hair keeps most of its natural movement. Curls loosen rather than disappear.
Smoothening is a chemical process. It relaxes the bonds inside the hair so it holds a straighter shape, then sets that shape with heat. The finish is flatter and more uniform than keratin, and it does not wash out — it grows out.
That single difference in mechanism drives everything else: how long each one lasts, who each suits, and what your hair looks like six months later.
Keratin
- What it does — smooths and seals the outer layer of the hair
- The finish — soft and glossy, with movement still in it
- Your curl — loosened and calmed, not removed
- How it ends — fades gradually and evenly, with no hard line
- Chair time — around four hours, based on real salon menus
- Suits — frizz, dullness, coarse or wavy hair you still want to look like your own
Smoothening
- What it does — restructures the bonds inside the hair to hold a straighter shape
- The finish — flatter, sleeker, more uniform
- Your curl — substantially reduced
- How it ends — grows out, leaving a visible line where new hair meets treated hair
- Chair time — also around four hours
- Suits — anyone who wants consistently straight hair without daily styling
The short version: keratin manages your frizz and keeps your texture. Smoothening changes your texture.
Both treatments run to a few hours and a meaningful cost, so the conversation before you sit down matters more than the one after.
Worth asking
- Which product line are you using, and why that one for my hair? A stylist who can answer this specifically is a good sign.
- How long will this take today? Four hours is normal. If you are quoted ninety minutes, ask what is being skipped.
- What does my hair look like when it wears off? The honest answer differs between the two, and you want to hear it before, not after.
- What aftercare do I need to buy? Most salons will recommend a sulphate-free shampoo. Factor it into the cost.
- When would I need this again? Get a real interval, not “whenever you like”.
A reasonable expectation
Ask for a strand test if you have any doubt about how your hair will take the treatment, particularly if it has been coloured. Any salon confident in its work will agree to one.
Both treatments are widely available across our partner salons. Keratin appears on 573 salon menus and smoothening on 550, with a typical session running about four hours in each case.
Prices vary far more than most people expect — by product line, by stylist seniority, and by how long and thick your hair is. Rather than quote an average that would mislead, each salon shows its own pricing in the Style Lounge app before you book.
Browse salons offering both in Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, Ghaziabad, Faridabad, Jaipur, Mohali and Zirakpur, or browse every verified salon.
Is keratin or smoothening better for frizzy hair?
Both reduce frizz. Keratin does it while keeping your natural texture, so your hair still moves the way it always did. Smoothening does it by making the hair straighter overall. If frizz is the problem and you like your texture, keratin is usually the closer fit.
Which one lasts longer?
Smoothening lasts longer in the sense that it does not wash out — the treated hair stays treated until it grows out. Keratin fades gradually over a few months. Longer is not automatically better: fading evenly is easier to live with than a grow-out line.
Can I get keratin if my hair is coloured?
Often yes, but it depends on the condition your hair is in and what was done to it. This is a question for the stylist who can actually see and feel your hair, ideally with a strand test. Do not decide it from an article.
How long does each treatment take?
Around four hours for either, going by the actual service menus of salons listed on Style Lounge. Longer and thicker hair takes more time. Anyone promising a dramatically faster version is doing something different.
Why do prices vary so much between salons?
Three things move the price most: the product line used, the seniority of the stylist doing the work, and the length and density of your hair. Two salons on the same street can quote very differently and both be reasonable.
Can I switch from one to the other later?
You can, but timing matters and so does the state of your hair. Going straight from one chemical process to another is where damage tends to happen. Ask your stylist how long to wait rather than booking back to back.
